Annual Urban All-American celebration benefiting Central City Ministry of Toledo is May 23

Central City Ministry of Toledo’s (CCMT) annual Urban All-American celebration, a fundraiser to benefit the students and teachers of CCMT schools, is 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at The Pinnacle (1772 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee).

Presented by Mercy Health, the Urban All-American celebration honors graduates of current and former inner-city Catholic schools who exhibit extraordinary achievement or academic, athletic and/or career success. They are role models for today’s students by demonstrating integrity, high ideals and moral character. Thomas G. Welch, MD, FaCC, regional chief clinical officer for Mercy Health is this year’s honorary chair.

Rev. Mark Thesing, director of finance and administration for the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame and chaplain of the University of Notre Dame football team, will deliver the keynote address.

A group of Toledo Police officers from 10 CCMT schools will be honored individually, including Detective Larry Anderson, Officer Phillip Carroll, Officer Bruce Cook, Sergeant Robert Furr, Sergeant Lee Kikolski, Officer Tim Meyers, Detective Craig Moore, Officer Randal Navarro, Detective Pete Swartz, Officer Theresa Talton and Officer Daniel Wagner. Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson will be in attendance to issue a proclamation of thanks and gratitude for each officer. Toledo Police Chief George Kral will also be in attendance, accepting an award for the Toledo Police Department as a whole.

WTOL’s Chris Vickers will emcee the event.

Volunteers Joe Linnenkugal and Wendy Czerwinski will receive the CCMT Rev. Bernard J. Boff Service Award, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the promotion and enhancement of Catholic education in the central city schools.
