Healing for a Caregiver’s Heart
Accessibility Ministries retreat offers caregivers a day of hope, faith and support.
Caregivers spend countless hours tending to the needs of others. On Saturday, February 21, about 25 caregivers were invited to pause, reflect and receive care of their own during the Healing for a Caregiver’s Heart Retreat at St. Joseph Parish.
Coordinated by the Diocese of Toledo Accessibility Ministries, the retreat was designed to offer emotional, mental and spiritual support to those who often carry the quiet burdens of caring for loved ones. Presenters Carol Kurivial and Kristen Kurivial Hug of Luminous Ministries led the day, sharing reflections, prayer and conversation focused on God’s presence in the caregiver’s journey.

The retreat opened with a powerful reenactment centered on Mary Magdalene during the Passion of Christ. The moving presentation drew a connection between Mary Magdalene’s faithful witness at the cross and the sacrificial love shown by caregivers today.
For many in the room, the moment was deeply emotional.
“The opening with the reenactment of Mary Magdalene and the Passion was very powerful, and I do not believe there was a dry eye in the room,” one participant shared afterward. “The correlation with being a caregiver and how it was done was wow … just wow.”
Throughout the day, attendees prayed together, shared their stories and reflected on the challenges and grace that come with caring for others. The atmosphere was both uplifting and supportive.
“Carol and Kristen were amazing as they shared so much with the attendees,” another participant said. “I felt inspired, loved and embraced by God with everyone in the room. We shared, we laughed, we sang and might have even shed a tear. These are the trademarks of an outstanding retreat.”

Organizers say retreats like this are especially important because caregivers are often overlooked. Many experience isolation and emotional strain while dedicating themselves to loved ones in need.
The goal of the day was simple but meaningful: to remind caregivers that they are not alone, and that their work — often quiet and unseen — reflects Christ’s own love and compassion.
By the end of the retreat, participants left not only with practical encouragement but also with renewed spiritual strength, supported by prayer, community and the reminder that God walks with them in their caregiving vocation.
