Diocese of Toledo Announces Closure of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Toledo

After a period of careful discernment and consultation, the leadership of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Toledo has requested to close and merge with Saint John the Baptist Parish in Point Place. Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas, Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo, has accepted this recommendation and formally issued a decree to this effect.

The final Mass at St. Michael the Archangel Church will be celebrated on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

This decision comes after a comprehensive and prayerful process that included extensive meetings between parish and diocesan leadership, as well as open meetings with parishioners.

Significant factors that led to this decision were:

  • Declining parish membership
  • Very low Mass attendance
  • A lack of active parish ministries
  • Increasingly fewer celebration of the Sacraments
  • Ongoing financial challenges

“We know this is a deeply emotional decision for many who have long called St. Michael their parish,” said Bishop Thomas. “We are grateful for the 125 years of Catholic faith and legacy of this community, and we trust in God’s providence as the parishioners of St. Michael find a new spiritual home at Saint John the Baptist Parish, Point Place.”

The Diocese of Toledo is committed to working closely with both communities to ensure a smooth transition in the coming months.
