Diocese of Toledo to Add the Five Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary To Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral

The Diocese of Toledo is excited to announce that it will be adding The Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, to be depicted on the five undecorated vaults of the ceiling in the Narthex (vestibule) of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. The Luminous Mysteries are five meditations on Jesus' public life, added to the Rosary and given to the Church by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002. The Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary are traditionally prayed on Thursdays and focus on key moments in the Life of the Lord: his Baptism, the Wedding Feast at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Holy Eucharist.

The addition of the five Luminous Mysteries completes the depiction of all 20 of the Mysteries of the Rosary at the Cathedral, including the already existing Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Bishop Daniel Thomas has desired to incorporate the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary in the Cathedral since his installation as Bishop. He remarked, “Given that the Cathedral is such an artistic jewel, it was important to identify the appropriate location to depict the Luminous Mysteries. It was providential to choose the Narthex vaults visually to compliment the other Mysteries depicted in the vaults of the side isles.”

Bishop Thomas continued, “We painstakingly worked to make sure the depiction is in the same style and artistic representation of the other Mysteries, so that, when complete, they will appear as if they had always been there.”These mysteries elevate Rosary Cathedral in Toledo to a unique status in its depiction of all 20 of the Mysteries of the Rosary, perhaps the first in the United States to depict the Mysteries in such a manner. These Mysteries encircle the interior perimeter of the cathedral telling the full story of the life of Christ in a unique and harmonious way.

The Diocese chose project manager Lou DiCocco of Liturgical Arts Studio, and artist David Lafleur of Cleveland, Ohio, to work on the drafts to depict the Mysteries, and the final designs were approved by the Cathedral Restoration Committee in March. It will be Mr. Lafleur who renders the paintings of the Mysteries that will grace the Narthex. Full funding for this project, pledged in our Diocesan Living Christ campaign, is being provided by the great generosity of the Luminous Foundation of the Delp Family.
