Monthly Ministry Highlight is a series from the Diocese of Toledo that shines a light on the many inspiring ministries serving our parishes and communities. Each month, we feature a different ministry making a meaningful impact—offering hope, healing, and the love of Christ across Northwest Ohio.
For many who have experienced the pain of abortion, the path to healing can feel unreachable. But in the Diocese of Toledo, Project Rachel offers a tender and unwavering reminder: God’s love and mercy are always within reach.
Coordinated by Kerstin Pakka through the Office for Life and Justice, Project Rachel is a USCCB-directed ministry that serves women and men who are suffering after an abortion, as well as siblings, grandparents, friends, and others impacted by it. Within the Diocese, the Joseph Ministry offers specific support for men.
“The mission of Project Rachel,” Kerstin explains, “is to walk with those suffering after an abortion as they come to experience God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness.”
Rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church, this ministry reflects what Pope Francis has called a field hospital—a place where the wounded find comfort and grace. “We serve those who are mourning the loss of someone they’re told they shouldn’t mourn,” says Kerstin. “By providing peer support, retreats, counseling, and spiritual guidance from kind, understanding, nonjudgmental priests, Project Rachel shows that there is no sin too great for God. No one is too far gone.”
While Project Rachel operates under the umbrella of Catholic Charities and the Diocese, it welcomes people of all faith backgrounds—or none at all. “I am asked to see everyone through the lens of God’s love,” Kerstin shares. “Even if they don’t believe what I do, I have the honor of walking with them as they journey toward healing. It is an absolute joy for me to be given the gift to watch God work in people’s lives.”
The impact is often profound. Kerstin recalls one woman who had carried the weight of an abortion for over 40 years. “She decided it was time to go to confession. She called me as she drove to the church, terrified. When she called me back afterward, she sounded completely different—peaceful, joyful. It was an incredible ‘before and after.’ That’s what this ministry is all about.”
Another time, Kerstin spoke at a local Catholic high school. “A student approached me afterward and said, ‘As someone who came into this class pro-choice and is leaving pro-life, thank you.’ That’s the Holy Spirit at work.”
Project Rachel is supported by Friends for Life, Catholic Charities donors, and individuals throughout the diocese who offer financial gifts and prayers. “This ministry couldn’t function without prayer,” Kerstin says. “If God isn’t at the center, it doesn’t work.”
