In the wake of the violence and attack on the United States Capitol Building this week, as Americans and people of faith, we condemn and denounce such acts of lawlessness, affronts to the very freedom and democracy for which we stand. In the midst of this turmoil, polarization and division, we pray for peace for our nation, that civility and order may be restored, and that all men and women of good will may respect one another in charity and in truth.
“The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of this great nation. In this troubling moment, we must recommit ourselves to the values and principles of our democracy and come together as one nation under God” writes Archbishop Jose’ Gomez, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. May these days see not further division, but efforts toward unity for the common good; not hatred and violence but reason and reconciliation. May we work together toward healing the wounds which tear at the fabric of our nation, and may Christ’s peace reign in our hearts (Col 3:15).
