2024 State CYO Tournament Finals

Toledo Becomes Home to CYO State Title and State Runner-Up in the 2024 State CYO Basketball Tournament

The CYO of Toledo is proud to announce to the entire Diocese that Toledo is home to the State Champions for High School Girls Basketball in Christ the King, and State Runner-Up for High School Boys Basketball in St. Rose – Zilles.

Christ the King, coached by Neil Chryst and Dan Nester, won the Diocesan Tournament in Toledo and competed in the State Tournament in decisive fashion, winning four games straight. The championship contest was held at Ursuline College (Div-II), in the Jane and Lee Sidman Gymnasium. In front of family and friends who made the trip, they defeated Avon Lake, St. Joseph Vikings, 55-32.

St. Rose, coached by Jason Zilles, competed tooth and nail as they took their championship game into double overtime but ultimately lost to Cleveland, St. Mary of the Falls, 58-53 . This loss was the first since January 29 of 2023, marking the end of a 21 game win streak.

St. Rose – Zilles was also awarded the "David Anthony Vinson" Sportsmanship Award, an award presented to one girls team and one boys team at each State CYO Tournament for the teams that showed outstanding sportsmanship qualities throughout their tournament play. David Vinson was a coach for Hamilton, St. Ann – St. Joseph who suffered a fatal heart attack during the 1993 State CYO Tournament, and this trophy has been presented since that time.

The State CYO Tournament is an annual tournament that joins Boys and Girls High School teams from other parts of Ohio. For Toledo, the qualifier is to be in the final four for the Boys HSB(AAA) Tournament and the final two teams for Girls HSG(AA). Next year, the tournament is to be held the weekend of February 21st-23rd. The host city is still to be determined.

Please celebrate the Achievements in Faith of each of the teams that competed in the 2024 State CYO Tournament – Boys: Glanford, St. John – Birkemeyer, St. Rose – Becker, and St. Rose – Zilles; Girls: Christ the King – Chryst / Nester, and Glandorf, St. John – Bockrath.
