Jubilee 2025

Pilgrims of Hope

In his announcement of the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis writes: “Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring.”

Pope Francis declared 2025 to be a Holy Year, a jubilee for the Church.

The theme of the Jubilee Year 2025, “Pilgrims of Hope,” is uniquely captured in the prayers, readings, and options of the Mass for the Holy Year. They stress the themes of pilgrimage and hope. Incorporated into Christ, the faithful are a Body of believers, filled with hope. They look forward to the Lord’s coming in the present and at the end of the ages, an expectation which gives them an eternal vision and moves them to make pilgrimage to God and neighbor.

What Is the Jubilee Year 2025?

A Jubilee Year is a special time in the Church’s tradition encouraging holiness through acts of reconciliation and communion with our brothers and sisters. The Church celebrates an Ordinary Jubilee every twenty-five years, with the last celebration having taken place in 2000. Jubilee Year 2025 will be marked by special opportunities for grace through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, local pilgrimages and the Jubilee Indulgence. Seeking forgiveness and growing in repentance are special fruits to cultivate during a Jubilee Year.

What Is the Jubilee Indulgence?

An indulgence is a special grace given by God, through the Catholic Church, for the removal temporal punishment for sins already forgiven in the Sacrament of Confession. While Confession absolves guilt, temporal punishment due to sin still remains. Through an indulgence, God’s mercy “reaches the sinner and frees him or her from every residue left by the consequences of sin,” as Pope Francis says. The Jubilee Indulgence is a special plenary indulgence available to the faithful during the Jubilee Year. It can be obtained – given the completion of the ordinary conditions – through pilgrimages, pious visits to holy sites, or works of mercy and penance.

Jubilee Prayer

Father in heaven,
may the faith you have gifted us in
your son Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity
kindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us, the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us
into diligent cultivators of the evangelical seeds
that make humanity and the cosmos rise
unto the confident expectation
of the new heavens and the new earth,
when with the powers of Evil overcome,
your glory shall be manifested eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
the yearning for heavenly treasures
and pour over all the earth
the joy and peace
of our Redeemer.

To you God blessed in eternity,
be praise and glory for ever and ever.
Amen.
