Inspiration Behind “The Surge”
“The Surge” is in response to both the staggering number of baptized Catholics leaving the faith paralleled with the growing national attention surrounding the rising numbers of converts entering the Catholic Church: “The Surge.” This local summer initiative is a three-part series of welcoming gatherings designed to help people explore why many are being drawn to Catholicism today; and if you left the Church, what you are missing.
The purpose is to provide a gentle and engaging first step for:
- those curious about the Catholic faith
- inactive Catholics returning with questions
- family members of Catholics
- those considering OCIA
- sponsors and parishioners interested in evangelization
Inside Each Session
- Welcome / hospitality / light snacks
- Opening Prayer (participants are welcome simply to listen)
- Testimonies from recent converts, sponsors, and returning Catholics
- Brief catechetical presentation on a key topic:
- Session 1: What is Drawing Converts to the Catholic Church?
- Session 2: Why Catholics Believe in the Eucharist
- Session 3: Common Misconceptions/Questions About Catholicism (Sacred Tradition/Sacred Scripture/Magisterium, Mary, Saints, Confession, Purgatory, and more)
- Open discussion / questions
- Resource recommendations and invitation forward
