CYO History and Awards

CYO Outstanding High School Athlete Award

Each year the CYO invites high school varsity coaches to nominate a senior player for the CYO Outstanding High School Athlete Award. This player must be a senior varsity player who participated in the CYO sport of their nomination from grade school through high school. They must have a good academic and disciplinary record as well as strong leadership qualities. The nominee must also serve as a positive role model for the current players in the CYO program.

CYO 8th Grade Leadership Award

The criteria for this award is as follows:


  • Must be an 8th grade student
  • Must be either a student at the parish school or a member of the parish
  • Must have participated in at least one CYO sport in both the 7th and 8th grades
  • Must exhibit strong leadership and be a team player
  • Must show strong academic and disciplinary record in school and the community
  • Must exhibit outstanding sportsmanship toward game opponents and officials
  • Must demonstrate strong Christian values

Paul Johnson Adult Contributor Award

The Paul Johnson Adult Contributor Award is awarded to parish or school members who work diligently to further the mission of CYO Athletics and aim to improve the overall student-athlete experience for all CYO players and coaches.

Mary Kurucz Veteran Coach Award

The Mary Kurucz Veteran Coach Award goes to CYO coaches who demonstrate tireless dedication to teaching and mentoring CYO student-athletes in athletics, faith and in life.

Clergy Award

The CYO Clergy Award was first presented at the CYO Basketball Banquet in 1971 to honor a priest who went “over and beyond” normal support of the CYO Athletic Program. The award was not presented from 1991-2006. In 2007 the CYO Advisory Committee felt that it was important to bring this award back to honor some of our supportive priests.

Msgr. Schmit CYO Service Award

The Msgr. Schmit Service Award was created by the CYO Advisory Committee to honor someone who has been involved in the CYO program for at least 25 years and who has modeled Msgr. Schmit’s commitment for the betterment of the CYO program.

Msgr. Schmit CYO Officials Scholarship Award

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a select applicant each year. The criterion for this award is as follows:


  • Must be a senior in high school
  • Must be accepted and enrolled in college for the upcoming fall
  • Must have worked in CYO in high school for three years, including senior year
  • Must have an outstanding attendance and performance record
  • Must display outstanding Christian character
  • Must have a good high school academic and disciplinary record
